ロンドン市長に「渋滞税」を導入したKen Livingstone氏が再選された様です。
「渋滞税」(congestion charge)とは、決められた時間帯に車でロンドン中心部に乗り入れる場合、１日５ポンド（約1000円）を払わなければならないという制度です。市民の反発や商業地での売り上げ減少の懸念など問題もあったものの、2003年初頭に制度が開始されたと同時にロンドン中心部の交通量は２割前後減り、渋滞はきれいさっぱり無くなったそうです。
渋滞税を導入した市長が再選されたとなると、世界中の渋滞に困っている都市で渋滞税を導入し始めるかもしれません。半年くらい前にテレビで「東京で渋滞税を導入するとどうなるか」という特集をやっていたのを見た覚えが有るのですが、東京でも導入を検討しているのでしょうか？？
公共交通機関の発達した都市部では、「車で移動する」ことも一種の贅沢なのかもしれません。そう考えると渋滞税の導入で本当に困る人達（運送会社とか？）への細かい配慮がなされれば、渋滞問題・環境問題を渋滞税によって解決するのも一つの良い方法と言えそうです。
